Chapter 1 & 2

Chapter One

Two concepts that I got from the first chapter were the fact that we communicate because of social needs and one of the features of interpersonal communication are uniqueness through cultural relation. When we think of communication we think of how to speak to others and how to solve certain situations or problems but we tend to over look how communication benefits us. Sometimes when I feel like I’m isolating myself I feel lonely and realize that I need actually communicate with others in order to help myself. The second concept that I got out of this chapter was the uniqueness that we experience through interpersonal communication. This to me can be shown when I communicate with my family or people I’m close with. Sometimes we tend to change the way we communicate when it comes to certain people. There is a certain comfort level that we face when we speak to people we know well and it tends to change rather than when we meet people for the first time. This uniqueness shows how comfortable you are with others and how you’re able to confude in them and also be yourself and speak with no boundaries.

Chapter Two

Two concepts that I got from this chapter are the way we communicate through our own culture and our own group of people. The second concept I got from this chapter was how we view other cultures and ethnocentrism. When we communicate we tend to change when it comes to speaking to other people and sometimes we believe that others will never understand where you are coming from when you communicate with them. As a Samoan who was raised in the states I was always the kid in school that could never go out with my friends. Sometimes my friends never understood this but because I was raised this way and they weren’t I could never explain to them to the point where they understood where I was coming from. This shows how hard it is to communicate with others other than your own race to explain certain situations. The second concept that I learned was ethnocentrism was the concept on how you view other cultures and how you compare with your own culture. And this was new concept I learned but I noticed that you can see that a lot today in society. Thru America you see how people viewed the Natives when the English settled here and how they viewed their culture and they viewed the Natives as savages with out even understanding them first.
