Chapter 5: Language

In this Chapter of Adler's Interplay textbook, the author speaks on the importance of language and how it is viewed between ourselves and through others. There are two concepts that are caught my attention in this chapter which was the use of racist language and also ambiguous language. Racist language according to the author is when people classify members of one group as superior and others inferior, an example of this is when people use derogatory language to bring down someone else based on race. This is a concept I wanted to use because this type of language tends be thrown around too often. We use it as a joke when it can actually be very offensive. It is used so often that we barely even realize what we are saying can be hurtful. The second concept was the use of ambiguous language which are words or phrases that can have more than one commonly accepted definition. Sometimes what we say can be either perceived differently or mean a totally different thing to someone else. This tends to happen a lot in slang. I'm from California, I was born and raised in the Bay but I lived in LA for a lot of my life as well and sometimes the slang that we use in the Bay is something that means a different thing in LA so the language is ambiguous and is taken differently than if you were speaking to someone you know or someone who stays in the same area as you.

Chapter 6: Non-Verbal Communication

1. Some non-verbal mistakes that Lisa Quast talks about in her article is when you have a limp handshake which can be taken the wrong way where they will believe that you are insecure or don't have any confidence in yourself. The second nonverbal mistake is too much or too little eye contact, too little eye contact can mean that you are very nervous and too much eye contact can mean that you are intimidating and are turning the interview into a stare down.

2. Some mistakes that I may have used was the mistake of making too little eye contact, I know that my very first interview for a job in high school I used too little eye contact and I was very nervous and I did everything to avoid eye contact with the hiring manager.

3. Some non-verbal communications that employers want to see are good attire, good attitude, good posture to show that you are confident and you are able to execute any job that they have for you.
