Chapter 7 & 8

Chapter 7

In this chapter we learned about the listening process and how we tend to have barriers when we listen or when other people listen to us. The components of listening can have to do with hearing which is a physiological component where we can start listening but tend to be distracted by background noise or auditory fatigue. This can happen sometimes for students in class, sometimes when they tend to be tired and have lectures they can be easily distracted or tired and they look like they'll be listening but they are often distracted. Another concept we learned in this chapter is the term empathizing, this is where you can relate to the person you're listening too and you're able to really understand where they are coming from because you have been in their shoes before. When I would vent to my friends about personal issues I always appreciated those who understood where I was coming from. It felt good to hear other people's experiences and to know that I wasn't alone in my situation.

Chapter 8

This chapter covered emotions and how we handle them and how we can be emotionally intelligent which means to manage our feelings in certain situations. We learned about the physiological changes during certain emotions and how our body changers during these certain emotions. I can relate to this in a way because there was a time in life where I was going through a break up from a boyfriend I dated for 4 years and during that time I felt very depressed and my body changed a lot. I lost sleep and lost my appetite and my emotions took over for awhile and it became hard to get back to a healthier me. Another concept we discussed in class was they way certain cultures handle emotions. I am Samoan and I often seen this as I grew up with my brothers. Men in our culture were suppose to constantly put up this front and show that they are manly and they are able to handle anything that they face. They are taught not to show emotion and are taught to keep their feelings bottled up.
